When Lori first mentioned her wedding venue, The Driskill, I immediately knew this wedding was going to be absolutely amazing. I was right. One of the perks of being an invitation designer is having a small part in the wedding day of some great couples. Perhaps the most special client so far, has been my sister (yes, identical twin sister) and her July wedding this summer.

Sarah and Chris were married in Havre de Grace, where we grew up, in the church that has quite a history in our family. Not only were my parents, and grandparents married in that church, a total of 13 couples have been married there (including myself and our other sister). The reception was held at Bulle Rock Golf Course. After sweltering heat for weeks, the wedding gods looked upon us and graced us all with relatively cooler temps for July 30th...we were all grateful.

CUSTOM TRAVEL INVITATIONS

I had known Katie a bit through mutual friends, and had designed her sister's wedding invitations last year, so I was thrilled when I heard the great news that she was engaged and asked me to design her invitations.

Katie and Sam are world-travelers who are currently living in Cairo and will be cruising the seas to Bermuda for their wedding in a few weeks. Katie did not want the seashell/beach theme invitations that are very popular for destination weddings, but knowing this couple's extensive traveling background, we thought to incorporate a travel theme. I did a few studies based on world-traveling, but Katie soon narrowed it down to specifically Bermuda, which I instantly loved. The invitation is designed from a vintage illustrated map of Bermuda in her color palatte of sand and coral. It was actually Sam's idea to incorporate the rsvp postcard which fit the travel theme perfectly. But to pull everything together...custom envelope liners of the world and vintage travel stamps. I don't know which detail I love more. The travel stamps were significant to the couple; Katie picked Illinois (where Sam is from) and Maryland (where Katie grew up).

I love when a couple chooses to do a custom invitations and especially when they have such great ideas for it like Katie and Sam did. It really reflects them as a couple and I was completely thrilled with the finished piece.

Sheilah and Chris' gorgeous wedding was held on October 23rd at The Fairfax at Embassy Row and I can't wait to share a few of these stunning photos. Their invitations turned out beautifully, and translated very well into the reception items we provided. Table Numbers, escort cards, cootie catcher favors, and menu cards complete with a belly band personalized with each guest's name. Sheilah and Chris really spared no details (Christian Louboutin's and $36,000 in rented diamonds!) on their big day. It was a such a pleasure working with a couple that is clearly head over heels in love with each other, as evident in their wedding photography. I asked Sheilah to provide me with a list of her wedding vendors and she added a few comments about each, which I choose to include, since she was quite thrilled with a few.

Leslie was gracious enough to send over a link to her beautiful wedding photos. The couple were married on top of Federal Hill Park against a stunning Baltimore skyline on October 10th...10.10.10! Perfect date for a perfect couple. After the ceremony, guests found their way to the B&O Brasserie, the restaurant within The Hotel Monaco. Having been to the B&O a few times, I was anxious to see how it would be transformed for a wedding reception. It turned out beautifully.

PART II: A DC CELEBRATION

Part II of "A DC Celebration", the invitations. These invites have it all...a custom design, sepia-toned images, wax seal, and a custom envelope liner, all turned out beautifully. Sheilah and Chris were very involved in the design process, something that I love since it really becomes about what the couple wants and reflects their personalities. We continued with the same theme as the save the dates but incorporated a beautiful copper gatefold to house all the information and details finished with the same wax seal. Most wax seals are used on the outer envelope, so to use it to fasten the gatefold is an unexpected touch. The last finishing touch is the custom envelope liner, which is Pierre Charles L'Enfant plan for the city of Washington from 1792.

A DC CELEBRATION

Perhaps one of my favorite projects to date for Just Ink On Paper. Sheilah and Chris came to me looking for custom invitations for their DC wedding this past October at The Fairfax at Embassy Row. A stunning location with presidential ties (the restaurant within the Hotel was a favorite of Jackie O's).

Both Sheilah and Chris have strong connections with DC and wanted to tie that into their wedding stationery. The challenge was to incorporate that without looking too "touristy". Their pieces were designed to be a "nod" to DC without being a blatant image. The Save The Dates worked perfectly with the decor of The Farifax, something very important to Sheilah. The wax seal came from a brainstorming session one afternoon while looking at a few designs and plays a prominent factor in their invitations as well. What I love about these save the dates is the incorporation of the black pocketfold. I think a few brides shy away from black for fear of looking to harsh, but it can be done beautifully.

There is a new blog on the scene, and sure to be one of the biggest and hottest around. United With Love, a blog brought to us by Julianne of The Garter Girl by Julianne Smith and Nole of Oh So Beautiful Paper™. The site just launched a few days ago and is already stunningly beautiful with vendor guides, real weddings, inspirations and tips and tricks. While the blog is "DC-Area" based, brides should take note that they are defining the area of DC "as anything from Baltimore, MD to Charlottesville, VA – as far west at the Shenandoah mountains and as far east as Annapolis, MD and the Eastern Shore region."

BLACKBIRD CAKERY

The newest corporate ID client for Just Ink On Paper is Blackbird Cakery, a new company we were thrilled to work with. A new transplant to Baltimore, owner Diane Stone has created a niche in the cupcake market with an "Edgar Allan Poe-theme" to her company. Taking a peak at her flavor list (which sound amazing by the way), all the cupcakes center around a Poe and Baltimore theme, something truly unique. With this in mind, Diane wanted to create an identity that was a little edgy (while avoiding the ghoulish/Halloween approach), and not your traditional pink and frilly cupcake feel.I would highly suggest a call to Diane for your cupcake addiction (she also does quite more than just delicious cupcakes as well).

HOLLY AND NICK | PARISIAN COLLECTION

Dusty Lavender and Pewter, NOT lavender and black...that was the theme of these invitations. I met Holly and Nick at the Baltimore Magazine Aisle Style Bridal Show last March, where they immediately gravitated towards the Parisian Collection for their wedding this October in Baltimore. Holly and I poured over the hundreds of PMS inks to choose the perfect shade of lavender, a color that was almost a sepia-toned lavender if you will, a term that we kept using to describe it. We finally hit on the perfect color, one that was more "dusty" than your typical "sweet" lavender. We complimented it with a dark gray ink, not black, to produce the same kind of look as the lavender, something a little more subdued. The Parisian is one of my favorite designs, and one that works beautifully with Holly's color palette.

Holly and Nick are the most perfectly gorgeous couple, with an equally perfect proposal story (complete with the "aww" factor) I read on their website. Looking forward to posting some photos of their ceremony and reception items for their wedding at the 1840's Ballroom next weekend.

AMPERSAND LOVE

The season is going strong with weddings, next up are Meghan and Mike's invitations for their wedding this November at the stunning Peabody Library in Baltimore. Meghan came to me with save the dates from another source, but wasn't thrilled with the invitation options that matched the suite. Enter Just Ink On Paper, to create her wedding stationery that still reflected the feel of her save the dates, but with a design she loved. The invitations are printed on a cream textured stock and paired with a metallic green backing to give an extra pop of color.

Soon to come are Meghan and Mike's reception items, which are chock full of "Meg and Mike" details. This couple has really made an effort to include guests in the everydays of their lives. In the works right now is a custom map serving as the unofficial guide to their favorite Baltimore destinations!

KATE AND STEVE'S RECEPTION

A soft palette of pinks completed Kate and Steve's wedding stationery with their reception items. Kate really choose to personalize her reception items as much as she could, a sweet detail that I loved. While their ceremony was held in a church (the same church Kate's parents were married in), their reception was held outside on the family farm under a beautiful tent. Their caterer was able to use the produce from the farm in the creation of the meals, a fact we highlighted on the menus. We also designed a "wedding mad lib" for guests to fill out during the cocktail hour. I can only image some of the creative responses Kate and Steve will receive on those cards.

ROBIN AND JASON | VINTAGE FLORAL

A stunning combination of navy and champagne set the tone for Robin and Jason's summer wedding this past August. Their wedding was held on the gorgeous grounds of the Gramercy Mansion with an outdoor ceremony and reception, which fit perfectly with the style of invitations she choose, Vintage Floral.

Weddings are in full season and keeping things quite busy these days. First up are Simone and Joe's invitations for their October wedding in Boston. Simone wanted invitations that had a vintage and modern aspect...something a lot of brides these days are looking for. She choose the Layla design from the collection, but really made the most of it with the dark purples and golds. Simone is such a sweet bride who is also an aspiring wedding planner. If you are in NYC, keep an eye out for her.

CLASSIC AND TIMELESS INVITATIONS

You might remember Kate and Steve's Save the Dates from a bit ago, I wanted to share their wedding invitations. Kate wanted her invitations to be very classic, nothing too flashy or bold. Using the same color palette as her save the dates, we choose to keep everything fresh and clean with just a little hint of color throughout. The belly bands are the same stock used in her save the dates, as well as the peony artwork, although in a completely different format. The peony filled almost the entire reception card, just to add a touch of sweetness and romance. It just proves that you really can not go wrong with beautifully classic wedding invitations. We are in the final stages of her reception items (including a mad lib card!), so check back for a look at what we did.

WHEN A DESIGNER GETS MARRIED...

While I try not to get too personal with my own life on this blog, I recently remembered that my own wedding was featured on a blog a little bit ago. This blog is Baltimore-centric, and provides great research for brides getting married in the area. It's been one of my favorites and was saddened to read in a post that it might not be around much longer? I really hope she continues on! You can read the Charm City Bride blog here.

While planning our wedding, I was working full-time for a design firm in Baltimore, but created all the paper products (invitations, programs, and reception items) for our wedding. I never realized how much work is involved in creating wedding stationery and I have been a professional designer for almost 10 years. While I loved every minute of it, I drastically underestimated how time-consuming the process is. For brides considering DIY stationery, think long and hard beforehand of the time/energy/materials involved in pulling off this feat. As I always say, your invitations are the first and (sometimes) only glimpse your guests will see of your wedding, make it count! MONOGRAM CHIC

I have been wanting to design an invitation solely based on using a monogram for a while now but wanted to keep it fresh and modern. After a few intial designs, I settled on incorporating circles to frame the monogram against the rounded frame of the invitation...mixing the two shapes. I love the simplicity of this design and would be perfect for a couple looking for a monogram that is more modern than vintage.

FT. MCHENRY | CUSTOM INVITATIONS

Kim and Ben came to me last year in search for invitations using a symbol Ben had created. The symbol incorporates quite a few details important to Kim and Ben, specifically the shape. If you are from Baltimore, you might notice the shape of the symbol is Ft. McHenry, where the couple had their first date. The symbol was used fully on the invitation and menu cards, and broken apart for the rest of the pieces to create a fun and energetic look for their stationery. I had the opportunity to design their save the dates, invitations, rehearsal invites, and reception items; including menus, place cards and table cards.

SWEET PEONY INVITATIONS

Renea is marrying the son of one of my mother's friends, so I was happy to design their invitations for their August wedding. Renea came with a specific idea of what she wanted, but very open to other ideas. Her colors of magenta and black I knew would work well with any design, especially since she wanted some type flowers on the invitations as well. I suggested a peony which she immediately loved. I had quite a few crystals left over from a previous invitation, so I used them to separate the ceremony information from the reception information as a unexpected touch. Coming up in a few weeks will be Renea's ceremony programs.

JUSTIFIED COLLECTION | KC AND CHRIS

Justified is perhaps one of the most popular designs in the collection, for it's bold typographic approach to an invitation. Every bride who has picked this design is looking for something modern and contemporary and something not so traditional.

KC and Chris came to me knowing they wanted this design after seeing it on the website. These invitations are a bold statements that fits perfectly with KC's ideas for her wedding... a laid-back, fun party at the Evergreen Mansion in July. Their color palette of tangerine and lime worked perfectly with the design. Stay tuned for their ceremony programs.

NEW DESIGN | STUDIO 450 (revised)

This invitation is somewhat new, but actually replaces an invitation design that I retired, Studio 450. Studio 450 was one of my favorites in the collection, but after designing it for an existing client, I realized that it had many limitations due to it's format and design, so I retired it. I still loved the design and wanted something similar that would work with any client's invitation wording, so I brought back Studio 450 in a whole new light. You might even say this design was born out of the Justified collection, one of my most requested. While Justified is bold and square, this design is a little more delicate in nature than the boldness of Justified. While I love the two-tone look of this particular invitation, this design can be easily designed in one color and still look stunning.

KATE AND STEVE'S SAVE THE DATES

Kate contacted me looking for a way to incorporate her engagement photo into her save the dates. After talking with her and realizing that most of her guest list is out out town, I recommended a pocketfold with an accommodations card and using her engagement photo as a tag to close the piece. Kate wanted very traditional and classic save the dates and invitations and mentioned that her parents have their own wedding invitations framed and displayed in their home. One of the philosopshy's behind Just Ink On Paper is creating invitations that will stand the test of time. A design that when looked back on in 30 years, will still hold up. So I was right on board with Kate's classic taste.

We decided to create a very soft feel for her save the dates, a metallic snow white pocketfold with a hint of pale pink. Just to add a touch of the unexpected, I designed her card with a very light Peony in the background to add a sense of whismy. Kate was an absolute pleasure to work with, in fact that hardest part was deciding which engagement photo to use, all were equally gorgeous. Invitations for her August wedding to come soon...

SWEET 16 SOIREE

It's great when design jobs literally fall into your lap. I contacted Lorez Reese from Simply Savvy Events after meeting very briefly at the Baltimore Magazine Bridal Show this past March. The email back said "this email could not have come at a more perfect time, I have a personal project I need invitations for ASAP!" Of course, I was more than happy to help out. The invitations were for her daughter's Sweet 16 Soiree, with a vintage Hollywood theme in crimson and black. Lorez gave me a few specifics of the event, but basically gave me carte blanche on the design.

I came up with a square tri-fold brochure, studded with crystals and tied with a black satin ribbon that ran behind all three panels of the invitations. The illustration was supplied by Lorez and really set the tone of the invitation, you can tell the birthday girl is quite the stylish one. I knew the crystal studs would take this invitation over the top. I can't wait to see the photos from the big night! I'm sure it was fantastic when the mother of the birthday girl is also the event planner!

This was the email I received from Lorez after showing the invitations to her daughter.

"First things first - my daughter LOVES her invitations!!! I mean the girl can not stop staring at them. KUDOS to you on a job well done."

BRIDAL SHOW TABLESCAPES

NEW DESIGN | A BEACHSIDE AFFAIR

This latest invitation design incorporates all the elements of a beach theme wedding while still creating a romantic and elegant feel. I created this design based on a few consultations with brides who were planning a destination wedding but still wanted something classic with a pop of color. I can already visualize this design in a variety of colors, all looking equally fabulous. While this particular set was printed three colors, it can easily be customized with two.

ORCHID WATERMARK COLLECTION | MEGAN AND KEVIN

Megan and Kevin came to me after seeing ceremony programs I designed for my best friend's wedding in September of 2008, in which Kevin was a guest. My first conversation with Megan was over the phone setting up our consultation, the day before I picked up our 4 month old English Bulldog. Megan screamed "Shut up, that's what I want!" I knew we would get along great after that comment. Needless to say, she scheduled their appointment the following weekend just to see the pup.

Megan and Kevin choose Orchid Watermark from their collection for their save the dates, invitations, and reception items in a beautiful chocolate brown for their October wedding at The Cloisters. The design features an orchid branch ghosted back ever so slightly to produce almost a watermark effect behind each card.

I just received an email a few weeks ago that Megan and Kevin are now the proud owners of their own little pudgy Bulldog named Louie!

Jenny's invitations were a sort of deja vü meets twilight zone for me. Not only did Jenny get married at the same venue as I, The Bulle Rock Golf Course, but she also got married at the same church and time. Jenny lives in Seattle so we worked completely by email, which worked out great. She choose Regency from the collection for her invitations with a color palette of golds, champagnes and a dusty rose which I can only imagined looked stunning with look and feel of Bulle Rock.

Allison and Dan are a Baltimore couple who got married in their home state of Florida with a ceremony on the beach this past December. Allison choose the design from my own wedding invitations with a color palette of red and black (a vast departure from my hot pink and orange color palette) including an illustrated wedding timeline. I had had the opportunity to design their ceremony and reception items. Since they had a very intimate wedding, we could really personalize her pieces. Instead of place cards, we used a belly band that wrapped around each menu card with each guest's name adding a more personal touch.

This most recent invitation design encompasses a vintage and modern look, perfect for the bride looking to combine all into one. The artwork is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau movement in Paris while still creating a nod to a more modern flair with clean lines and white space. I am currently designing this invitation for a bridal client in pewter and a smoky lavender which looks beautiful with the subtle color palette.

Welcome all to the blog. After many months of toying with the idea of starting a blog, I decided to throw caution to the wind and jump right in. Blogging for designers serves as a great way to showcase more of their current work without the constant update of the website. While my website has about 65% of what is in the collection, this will be a great way to show you more of the work Just Ink On Paper is producing.

My goal is to post once a week and provide some information and "eye-candy" for those who read. Not only will I showcase some current work, but I will also have a "Real Weddings" feature of past clients wedding photos, and possibly some tips and vendor spotlights.
